Most of the ISP recently has resorted to Bit Torrent traffic manipulation using different type of traffic shaping methods (e.g., firewalls, traffic shapers, censors, and redirectors) . Most of the time, they use hardware Deep packet Inspection which tells them if someone is using bit torrent or not and if they are then ISP apply different traffic shaping rules which limits upstream and downstream.

Usually it’s very hard for users to find out if their ISP's are using this kind of techniques. But now, Google, the Democratic Party-affiliated New America Foundation, and the PlanetLab Consortium (a university-business consortium devoted to next-generation networks) announced M-Lab.

Using online tool found here , You can now check and see whether your ISP blocks or rate limits BitTorrent traffic.

This is a good step towards net neutrality.

I would not put it past a lot of isp's to be doing a lot of shady actions.

I also wanted to make you aware of a typo on your title of this blog post.

your title says ::::Is your ISP is manipulating BitTorrent traffic? The second is should be deleted.

Have a good one!

Hi Friends,

The goal of our Glasnost project is to make access networks, such as residential cable, DSL,and cellular broadband networks, more transparent to their customers.ISPs are increasingly deploying a variety of middleboxes (e.g., firewalls, traffic shapers, censors, and redirectors) to monitor and to manipulate the performance of user applications.
