As if bandwidth throttling and joining force with PHORM was not enough, Virgin media has now joined forces with Channel 4 and BSkyB in a bid to help the government tackle internet piracy
According to reports by PCADVISOR website, " Chief executives from the three companies, along with those from record labels and movie distribution firms, are advising communications minister Lord Stephen Carter and the Digital Britain Report Steering Board on the best methods to tackle the problem of illegal file sharers.
It is hoped the group's advice will help Carter set out a strategy in his Digital Britain report, which is due to be published on June 16.
It is thought the group is pushing for the creation of a regulatory body, which will be overseen by Ofcom, to track down and prosecute illegal file sharers, along with legislation that will force ISPs to punish repeat offenders."
I don’t believe in illegal file sharing but what I do believe in is Online Privacy. To track down the so called illegal file sharers, Virgin media will have to use deep packet inspection technology and other monitoring tools on their network ( alongside PHORM ) and it means that all the traffic going through their network will be monitored at very deeper level whether you prefer to opt-out of PHORM of not.
In my opinion, I think is time to move away from such ISP and send them a message that this kind of monitoring activities are not appreciated by their customers
